116 Big Game Reel First Model. Here is a Penn Senator 12/0 first model c.1937 with the original 6 1/4 counterbalanced handle with catalin (resin) knob. Most of these handles were replaced when the torpedo handles came out in 1939, according to Michael Cacioppo in his outstanding Penn Reels book. There are no front harness lugs which also identifies it as a first model.
Plates are in very good shape with no chips or cracks. Some corrosion, especially on the inside of the stand, although the reel retains most of it's chrome plating over the nickel silver frame. Please enlarge the photos from all angles.Cranks smoothly and the free spool lever works. Star drag rotates although I couldn't detect any change in drag tension - seems like the drag is stuck on.
